Closet Cleanout

Summer is officially in full swing and that can only mean one thing: it’s time for lazy beach days, fun family gatherings, and warm nights under the stars. Bathing suits, sundresses, sandals, and tank tops have probably piled up and chances are you are feeling a bit overwhelmed with the state of your closet. Now is a great time to edit your wardrobe to ensure you have a closet full of things you love, so getting dressed is quick and easy and the clothes you have make you feel confident and beautiful. Here are five quick tips to get your closet in shape for the summer!

Tip #1: Set aside time to get the job done.

Like anything else done well, editing your closet requires intentionality and time. If you don’t plan for it and make it a priority, it will never happen. Block off a generous amount of time to devote to looking thoroughly at each piece of clothing. Take an afternoon or make a date with yourself. Have some fun! Turn on music or put on a movie you love in the background.

Tip #2: Pull everything out of your closet.

You can’t fully analyze your wardrobe until you see exactly what you have. Sort everything into categories (jeans, t-shirts, leggings, dresses, etc.) Bonus points for color coding!

Tip #3: Review each piece and ask questions.

Here’s a list of questions to ask yourself about each item to help you decide which items make the cut.
-Is it in good shape?
-Does it have stains, holes, or other defects?
-Does it still fit?
-Have I worn it in the last 12 months?
-Am I excited to wear it again?
-Is it comfortable to wear?
-Does it fit my current style?
If the answer is no to one or more of these questions, it’s likely time to let it go.

Tip #4: Decide what to keep, sell, donate, or toss.

This is the hardest part, but it will be worth it (we promise). Label three bags “SELL” “DONATE” and “TOSS”. As you take a look at each item and ask yourself the hard questions, be honest with your answers and put each piece of clothing in the appropriate bag. Pretty soon you’ll see that the “KEEP” pile is made up of clothes you love and feel good about wearing!

Tip #5: Consider a service like Color Guru to help guide your future purchases.

All of us get stuck in a rut from time to time with our clothes, wearing the same items or colors over and over or not knowing which colors and styles look best on us. Color Guru analyzes your skin, hair, and eye color to determine your very best color palette for clothing, hair and makeup. They’ll use photos of you to develop a seasonal color analysis and send you a color card that identifies the colors you look best in. I recently bought this service for both myself and my mother and I can’t believe what a difference it has made. I simply take my color card into the store and buy clothes that match the colors that look best on me, and voila! My closet is full of clothes I can rely on to make me look and feel great. In fact, I love this service so much that I’ve teamed up with the Color Guru for a GIVEAWAY featuring their Plus Package. The giveaway will launch tonight at 8 pm on Instagram!
